The past or the future ?

Greenwich Swimming Club developed its roots way back in the 1920s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Training still takes place in the splendid Arches Leisure Centre deep in the heart of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
We are a proud club and endeavour to offer a friendly environment which encompasses "fitness " swimming all the way through to the higher end of competitive training. Whatever you wish to achieve through membership of a swimming club, we hope we can fulfill your desires at GSC.
Swimming training can be hard and arduous, and sometimes requires real grit and determination. However, you never know if you put the effort in, one day you may end up looking as good as this fine young gentleman!

Special General Meeting, Friday 18th May, 7.30pm
John Roan School Maze Hill Site. All members should attend. Please note there will no swimming on this night. Please email if you need more information.

New Pool Controversy Gala Results

Oscar Livesey and Josh Monahan traveled up to Sheffield in November to compete in the National Disability Championships. Josh put in some great freestyle times ,and Oscars results placed him high up in the World Rankings. click here for DW's report

The council is planning to build a new pool in Greenwich which is too shallow for our swimmers to learn to dive in.

So when the Arches closes in a few years, and the new pool is in operation, children would have to go to Eltham, or the Lido to learn to dive.

This is clearly wrong.

We need to let the council know loud and clear that this is unacceptable.

Make the pool deeper - or better still - have a moving floor at the deep end. That way it can cater for everyone.

We've already had articles in the Evening Standard, the News Shopper, and a parent on LBC Radio.

This must be the beginning of a campaign to make the council understand this is not acceptable - especially for an Olympic Borough.
Please let your feelings be known to Council Leader Chris Roberts and local MP as well as signing the online petition.

FYI

The council invited us to a meeting in 2006 to talk about the new pool in East Greenwich, and again in 2008.

At the meeting in 2008 they told us the dimensions of the two pools would be;

the smaller pool will be 20m long X 10m wide. They had planned for it to be 0.9m depth all the way along.

At the meeting we asked for it to be made deeper, as the 'beach' pool at Eltham is limiting.
They took this on board at the meeting and said they should be able to slope it from 0.9m – rising to 1.5m or 2m at the deepest point.

They told us the larger pool would be 25m X 13m (6 lanes) – with a depth starting at 1m and rising to 2m depth. Which was fine for us.

The spectator area for the main pool was due to be 18m squared

BUT

Last February (2012) they invited us to our first meeting since that one in 2008, and the depths had changed. And the building work was starting the very next month!

The main pool is due to be just 1m deep (or shallow) at both ends, sloping to 1.5m in the middle.

While the smaller pool has been reduced to 0.75m at both ends and sloping to 0.9m in the middle.

The spectator area for the main pool has now gone altogether

And at the meeting in 2008 they said they thought they would be able to find us a club office poolside as there were lots of offices around the new building.

They now say they can't offer that either. We might get a share of a storage cupboard.

A moveable floor is the answer. Take one look at Lewisham's new leisure centre they're building opposite Lewisham station - BOTH of their pools have moveable floors.

To put it in perspective, the ASA allow people to dive in 1 metre of water - if they have achieved a competitive start award.

But the ASA recommend that LEARNING TO DIVE should be done in 1.8 metres of water.

The council says children would have to go to Eltham or the Lido to learn to dive.....which isn't very realistic or practical. A bit like telling all the football clubs in the borough they can only practise shooting at 1 or 2 pitches in the borough.

Bear in mind in the shallow end at Eltham (which is 1 metre deep) - they don't allow ANYONE to dive in as they say its too shallow....

National Arena Swimming League

The last round of this years competition saw GSC back at Eltham for the "B" final of division 2. Knowing there would be some tough opponents we gathered together a strong team with the help from some our senior University attendees. The result was an outstanding win, putting us 9th overall in the division. A super achievement considering we only just qualified into division 2 this year. Well done to swimmers of the meet Cassi Hoyle and Ammin Naqvi .
