Goodbye Eltham Pool
Eltham Pool is due to close
any day now. Let’s hope the new pool is half as good! Purists might complain
about the length of the pool but boy, did the swimmers have fun there!
Crystal Palace
Rather conveniently, it seems, asbestos has been found at the pool. It was immediately closed and will be refurbished. It is not expected to open for at least a year. The Committee is negotiating with The Arches Pool management in an attempt to obtain more pool time
Sharks Gala
All
Sharks are invited to enter the gala. All swimmers will receive certificates
with their times on. These along with trophies and medals will be presented at
the Presentation/Christmas party that will be held on 1st December.
If you won a trophy last year and haven’t yet returned it please will you bring
it in to the office as soon as possible.
Club Championships
These will be held this year
at Ladywell Pool. Sue Winter tried to hire Eltham Pool but was unable to.
Swimmers need to have been a
member of the Club for six months to enter. Last year there was a small group
of swimmers who did not enter because they considered that they had no chance
of winning! The Champs are an opportunity for our swimmers to have FUN
together. Any race can only have one winner and, in order for them to “win”,
others need to “loose” My suggestion is you work to “beat” yourselves! Record
your times in your log-books and watch the seconds drop off. Log books can be
obtained from the club office at a cost of £3.50 per book, additional pages can
be obtained free of charge from Jerry Preston. Entry forms for the
championships are enclosed with this letter. Please return them with payment to
the club office by 4th November.
Vacancy
The Club needs someone
prepared to take over the role of Club Secretary/Swim 21 Coordinator. Next year
we will have to put together a new bid in order to retain our Swim 21
Accreditation If you are interested in either role please come into the office
to discuss it.
Jack
Petchey
Forms to nominate members to receive the Jack
Petchey award are in the office. If
there is an adult you would like to nominate please do so. We are allowed one
award a year to an adult and this is worth £1000
Website
shop.
If you are buying from the internet please will you
see if the site you are buying from can be accessed from our web site? We get
commission if you do and every penny we make elsewhere helps to keep the fees
unchanged
Inter-squad
gala badges
These badges are now in the club office. GSC would
love to see each swimmer displaying their team badge; swimmers have already
made suggestions as to where they will be displaying theirs. Ideas so far have
included their T-Bag, T-shirt and GSC swimming bags. They are very bright and
colourful and depict the squad that the swimmers are in. They have been
subsidised by Jack Petchey money, and are only 50p per badge. Samples
are on the club notice board.
Water
Bottles of water are available from the club office
at a cost of 50p per bottle. Payment must be made at the time of
purchase. Cans of coke are also available while stocks last for 50p a can.
These may be drunk after your training session.
Deficit
As explained in our last
newsletter Paul, our treasurer, has predicted a deficit for the year of about
£4000. The Committee are discussing ways to avoid this. If you have any fund
raising ideas please talk to Bill Evans – our new social secretary. We are
trying very hard to avoid an increase in fees.
Communication
We now have a small data base of parent’s email addresses. If you would
like your address added please email info@greenwichswimmingclub.org.uk to request this.
IMPORTANT
GALA INFORMATION
Greenwich Swimming Club is a competitive club; we
are currently in 4 leagues;
·
Millennium
·
Tudor
·
North Kent Juniors
·
Speedo
We request that all parents and swimmers check the notice board regularly
and make a note of the dates that these galas are due to be held on, especially
if your child is often requested to swim. If your child is requested to swim in
one of the various galas that we enter GSC would appreciate every effort is
made to attend. All too frequently first choice swimmers are unable to swim. Unfortunately
some swimmers/parents are phoning the night before or the day of the event
giving their apologies after saying they are available. Whilst illness and
exceptional circumstances are understandable and unavoidable other reasons are
unfair on GSC staff that have to then find other swimmers at extremely short
notice. Even more importantly it is unfair on the rest of your TEAM. If
transport to galas is a problem please speak to a member of the committee as
often transport can be arranged, likewise if you are attending galas and are
able to assist with other swimmers please inform the office.
